Tyler Herrington, MSc, PhD Candidate
Tyler is a PhD Candidate at the University of Waterloo, working in Dr. Chris Fletcher's research group, with a focus on validating reanalysis and climate model permafrost soil temperatures in the Arctic. Tyler is interested in the impact that changes in snow cover have on permafrost, and how differences in parameterizations of snow cover in models can contribute to model uncertainty in permafrost soil temperatures. Tyler also has an MSc in Physical Geography from Simon Fraser University, where he focused on Climate-Carbon Cycle Dynamics, working with Dr. Kirsten Zickfeld.
What is your role in the C1W project?
My role in the C1W project is to validate Reanalysis-based soil temperatures across Canada’s North, and to investigate how variations in snow cover and differences in land models influence permafrost.
What benefits do you think C1W will bring to Canada/Canadians?
We currently have a limited understanding about hydrological processes in cold regions, particularly over North America, where observations are sparse. Understanding these processes is crucial to understand how water availability and permafrost will change in the future!
