CANADIAN WATER RESOURCES ASSOCIATION, Water News Volume 42, No 4 – Fall 2023: Eliminating the unknowns: Canada1Water reveals the country’s water future with a new continental-scale model.

Few decisions are more crucial to our future than how we manage freshwater resources. Wise choices require a clear understanding of conditions today and how they are likely to change over time. That’s exactly what the Canada1Water project aims to provide by giving Canadian decision-makers an all-new continental-scale model of groundwater, surface water and climate interactions that looks out to the end of this century.

The Canadian Water Resources Association has included a feature article on the Canada1Water project in the latest issue of Water News CWRA's official magazine.

“Making more and better information available about water resources is widely seen as key to any successful long-term water management strategy. It was one of five priorities that emerged from consultations on the new Canada Water Agency and has been called for by independent bodies such as the Canadian Water Security Initiative.

Other proposed ‘must-do’ actions have met with broad agreement as well: making full use of cutting-edge science to solve water issues, breaking down jurisdictional silos, engaging the public, and partnering with Indigenous peoples.

Canada1Water has potential to contribute to all of these, says AAFC research scientist David Lapen. “This project is making enhanced data available to anyone who wants it, with a national model that crosses geopolitical boundaries and active engagement with all kinds of stakeholders, including Indigenous communities.”
